Conservative MP from the Kitchener Centre, Stephen Woodworth spoke to approximately 25 students at Brandon University on Monday, January 21. Mr. Woodworth spoke on the topic of why the legal recognition of the equal worth and dignity of every human being should be re-established in Canada. He briefly explained the misconceptions of Motion 312, which was the Private Members bill he introduced in 2012. “Motion 312 isn’t about abortion,” Mr. Woodworth stated before explaining his motion sought the formation of a committee from the House of Commons to be appointed to review Subsection of 223(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. Subsection 223(1) states that a child becomes a human being only at the moment of complete birth, Mr. Woodworth stated the revision of this 400 year old law is necessary because modern medicine has since disproven the law. Following his 45 minute presentation Mr. Woodworth answered questions from students. While the topic of Mr. Woodworth’s presentation and Motion 312 were not on abortion, the majority of questions became abortion focused with many questions being situational in nature. “The event has since sparked discussion on and off campus which is great to see!” Said BUSL president Catherine Dubois, “This is the purpose of our club, in a nut shell, so it is great to engage with other students with varying opinions and get conversations started.”
